In short: Google Ads has two cost blocks: the ad budget, which goes straight to Google, and the management — your own time or an agency. In Switzerland a click costs anywhere from around CHF 0.10 to over CHF 30, depending on the search term. The good news for restaurants and hotels: your terms are among the cheapest. "restaurant zürich" costs CHF 0.16 to 1.63 per click, "google ads agentur" (Google Ads agency) CHF 12 to 31. For a single venue, CHF 500 to 800 of ad budget per month is a realistic start; according to Gryps, agencies charge around CHF 2,000 per month on top for management. What matters in the end is not the click price but what a guest costs — in one of our restaurant accounts that was CHF 16 per reservation request in July 2026.
The two cost blocks of Google Ads
1. The ad budget. It goes directly to Google. You pay per click on your ad (CPC, cost per click) — impressions without a click are free for search ads. There is no base fee and no minimum budget. You set an average daily budget; Google may spend up to twice that on individual days, but over the month it never charges more than the daily budget times 30.4.
2. The management. Setting up the campaign, choosing search terms, writing ads, excluding irrelevant searches, setting up conversion tracking, optimising continuously, reporting. That costs either your time or a fee.
Depending on the setup there are one-off items too: a landing page the ad leads to, and tracking for calls, directions and reservations.
What a click costs in Switzerland — real numbers
Google Ads is an auction. Who appears for a search is decided by bid and quality: how well do search term, ad and landing page fit together? You never pay more than your maximum bid, usually less.
The figures below come from the Google Keyword Planner (Switzerland, German language, retrieved on 5 October 2026). The range shows what advertisers typically bid for the top ad positions — from the low to the high end.
| Search term | Searches per month | Click price (CHF) |
|---|---|---|
| restaurant zürich | 40,500 | 0.16 – 1.63 |
| restaurant in der nähe (restaurant near me) | 40,500 | 0.48 – 1.42 |
| restaurant luzern | 33,100 | 0.10 – 0.77 |
| brunch zürich | 14,800 | 0.36 – 1.06 |
| sushi zürich | 6,600 | 0.41 – 1.53 |
| hotel zermatt | 6,600 | 0.48 – 1.79 |
| hotel zürich | 4,400 | 0.77 – 3.39 |
| weihnachtsessen zürich (Christmas dinner) | 320 | 1.34 – 3.79 |
| seminarhotel schweiz (seminar hotel) | 260 | 1.95 – 7.33 |
| website erstellen lassen (have a website built) | 720 | 6.80 – 18.12 |
| seo agentur (SEO agency) | 880 | 5.29 – 14.33 |
| google ads agentur (Google Ads agency) | 210 | 12.29 – 30.96 |
Three things stand out:
Restaurant clicks are cheap. Most restaurant terms sit below CHF 2. A single guest is worth a modest amount to advertisers — nobody bids CHF 20 for a brunch click.
Occasions cost more — and earn more. Christmas dinners, company events, seminars: here one booking is worth a whole group, so bids rise. For you these are often the most lucrative clicks.
Hotels pay more than restaurants. On hotel terms the big booking platforms bid too. If you want to be visible there, you need a clear reason to book direct.
The real lesson: with restaurant terms the click is not what's expensive — the wrong click is. Without exclusions, your ad for "restaurant zürich" also shows for "restaurant zürich jobs" or "restaurant zürich for sale" — and each of those clicks costs as much as a real guest.
What budget is realistic
A worked example with open assumptions: CHF 600 ad budget per month, roughly CHF 20 per day. In a restaurant account we run, one reservation request cost CHF 16 in July 2026. Applying that value, CHF 600 would yield around 37 requests. Assume two thirds of them turn into an occupied table with an average of CHF 150 revenue: about CHF 3,700 revenue from CHF 600 of ad spend. The value varies with location, cuisine and season — a worked example, not a promise.
Two limits still apply:
The floor. Technically there is no minimum budget. In practice a campaign needs enough clicks to learn which searches bring guests. Below roughly CHF 10 per day that takes a very long time.
The ceiling is demand. More budget than there are matching searches buys the wrong clicks. We experienced this in our own account: when the budget exceeded the number of matching searches, Google spread it across ever more distant queries — all the way to people looking for cheap goods. Since then we check how many people actually search around a location before spending a single franc.
What management costs — yourself, a freelancer or an agency
| Route | Cost | Fits if … |
|---|---|---|
| Yourself | no fee, but learning time plus a few hours per month | you like working with numbers and have time |
| Freelancer | CHF 130–200 per hour | you need a clearly defined campaign |
| Agency | CHF 1,300–3,500 per month, average CHF 2,000 | several campaigns or larger budgets are running |
Hourly rates and agency prices: Swiss comparison portal Gryps, excluding ad budget. Many agencies also charge a one-off setup fee.
Four warning signs when comparing:
- The ad account belongs to the agency. The Google Ads account must be in your venue's name — otherwise you lose the entire campaign history when you switch.
- Fee as a percentage of ad spend. Then the agency earns more when you spend more — not when more guests come.
- The report counts clicks and impressions. Ask for calls, directions and reservations.
- Long minimum term. Whoever delivers does not need a twelve-month lock-in.
For transparency: we run Google Ads for restaurants and hotels for CHF 890 per month, cancellable monthly — including a dedicated landing page and a monthly report. The ad budget goes separately and directly to Google. If you also use our review system Trophy: the Markt Dominanz package already includes a monthly optimised Google Ads campaign (see packages).
The six most expensive mistakes
1. Optimising for clicks instead of guests. The "maximise clicks" bid strategy delivers exactly that: clicks. Give every important action — directions, call, reservation — a franc value and Google learns to optimise for guests.
2. Location option "presence or interest". That is the default: your ad also shows to people who are merely interested in your region but are somewhere else entirely. In one account we manage, around a fifth of the budget initially went to searchers outside the catchment area this way. For a restaurant, "presence" is almost always right.
3. Search partners and display expansion switched on. Both are often active in new search campaigns and bring clicks from sites that have little to do with your search. Switch them off at launch, test them deliberately later.
4. No excluded search terms. "jobs", "apprenticeship", "recipe", "do it yourself", "free" — and everything you don't offer. Read the search terms report weekly.
5. The ad leads to the homepage. Someone searching "brunch zürich" wants the brunch menu and a reservation button, not your company history. A dedicated landing page with reservation, directions and phone in the first screen also lowers the click price, because Google rewards relevance.
6. Budget larger than demand. See above: more money does not make small demand bigger — it only buys worse clicks.
Three real numbers from restaurant accounts
All figures come from Google Ads accounts we run ourselves. The venues stay anonymous, every window is dated:
- +1,335 directions started to four restaurants in the Zurich region, February to June 2026
- 19 directions to the venue in the first campaign week — Indian restaurant, Zurich Seefeld, August 2026
- CHF 16 ad spend per reservation request — restaurant in Wallisellen, July 2026
Is Google Ads worth it for a restaurant?
It pays off when three conditions are met:
- There is enough search demand. Around a city location almost always, in a village with regulars often not. The Keyword Planner shows it upfront.
- The landing page makes reserving easy. Two clicks to a reservation, phone tappable, directions with one tap.
- Your Google profile convinces. Many clicks end up on your profile. If the average is below 4.0, guests filter you out — and you pay for visits that don't reserve. In that case, fix the reviews first.
Google Ads and local search engine optimisation don't exclude each other: ads buy visibility from day one, local SEO builds it permanently. Ads do not directly influence organic ranking — they bridge the time until it carries. How organic ranking works is covered in Improving your Google ranking.
