In short: The Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the most important digital channel for restaurants and hotels in Switzerland — more important than your own website. Set up the fundamentals properly (categories, opening hours, photos, attributes), then keep two things running consistently — fresh reviews with replies and weekly activity — and you compete for the top 3 on the map in most neighbourhoods. This guide shows step by step how to create, claim, edit and turn the profile into a booking channel.
What is the Google Business Profile — and why does it decide your occupancy?
The Google Business Profile is the listing that appears when someone googles your venue or searches Google Maps for "restaurant near me": name, stars, photos, opening hours, directions, reservation button. Google used to call the service "Google My Business"; after the rebrand it is officially the Google Business Profile.
For hospitality venues this profile is not a side stage. Nine out of ten guests check it before they book — many never see your own website at all. The profile is shop window, menu, reputation and booking flow in one. And it is free: what you invest is care, not money.
Creating or claiming your profile — the three cases
Case 1: No listing exists yet. Go to business.google.com, sign in with a Google account that belongs to the business (not a staff member's private account), and enter name, category and address. Important: the name must match the real-world name exactly. Additions like "Adler Restaurant — best fondue in the region" violate Google's guidelines and risk suspension.
Case 2: The listing exists but belongs to no one. The most common case — Google creates listings automatically from public data. Find your venue on Google Maps and click "Own this business?". Verification follows.
Case 3: The listing belongs to the wrong person. Previous owner, former employee, an agency that stopped replying. Google offers a formal recovery process at business.google.com/claim. Expect 5 to 14 days. Until ownership is resolved, every other optimization is wasted time — this step always comes first.
On verification: Depending on the case, Google asks for a video recording of the venue, a phone call or a postcard to the business address. Video verification is now the standard: exterior with signage, interior, access to the non-public area (kitchen, storage). Ten minutes of effort, then the profile is yours.
Editing the listing: the fields that actually matter
Once you have access, edit the profile directly in Google Search (search for your own venue and the editing menu appears) or via business.google.com. These fields decide:
Primary category. The single most important field. "Italian restaurant" ranks for different searches than "Pizzeria" or "Brasserie". Choose the most specific category that is true, and add up to nine secondary categories (bar, catering, delivery — for hotels: restaurant, spa, conference hotel).
Opening hours — including holidays. Swiss guests do not call to ask. They google, see "closed" or "hours unconfirmed", and book the next place. Maintain August 1st, Easter, Ascension, Whitsun and regional cantonal holidays too. Changing hours takes thirty seconds — one wrong holiday costs 30 to 50 tables a year.
Photos with hierarchy. At least 15 images: exterior (the cover), interior by day and evening, three to four dishes in professional quality, team, menu. Hotels add: room categories, breakfast room, view. Two or three fresh images every 60 to 90 days — photo activity is a direct ranking signal.
Attributes. Reservations available, wheelchair accessible, vegan options, outdoor seating, dogs allowed, parking, wifi. Every attribute is a search filter — an empty attribute field is a lost match.
Description with a local anchor. 750 characters in which category and location appear naturally ("Italian restaurant in Zurich's Seefeld"). No keyword stuffing — Google detects and punishes it.
Links for reservations and the menu. Straight to your online reservation (Lunchgate, OpenTable) or booking flow. Every extra click between "I want to book" and "confirmed" costs 15 to 25 percent of conversions.
Q&A section. Any internet user may answer questions on your profile — including competitors and disgruntled ex-guests. Post the five most common questions yourself and answer them yourself.
What actually moves the ranking
Google weighs local listings by three factors: relevance (does your profile match the query), distance (where the searcher stands) and prominence (how visible your venue is online). You cannot change distance. Relevance and prominence you can:
- Reviews — count, average, freshness and whether you reply. The strongest lever you control.
- Profile completeness and activity — every field maintained, weekly Google Posts, fresh photos.
- Consistency — name, address, phone identical on your website, Local.ch and everywhere else.

Reviews: the part you cannot scale manually
A perfectly maintained profile with 23 reviews loses against a mediocre one with 400. Profile care is craft — review growth is a systems topic, because it depends not on you but on your team in the service moment.
Ristorante La Terrazza in Lucerne's old town is our reference case: from around 9 to 85 Google reviews per month, 144 new reviews in four months — and the new reviews arrive at a 4.7 average instead of 3.4. The mechanism: every server carries a personal NFC card, every review is attributed to them personally, and the team turns it into a game of streaks and ranks. Trophy is not a review-collection machine but a team-motivation system that collects your reviews on the side — how it works explains the mechanics, the vertical pages for restaurants and hotels show it for your type of venue.
The five most common mistakes
Mistake 1: The primary category stays "Restaurant". Too generic — the specific category wins the specific search.
Mistake 2: Opening hours without holiday maintenance. A single wrong "open" on Good Friday produces disappointed guests — and they write reviews.
Mistake 3: Smartphone photos from day one, never renewed. Google favours fresh images; guests decide on the first photo impression.
Mistake 4: Reviews without replies. A profile whose last owner reply is ten months old looks abandoned — to guests and to Google.
Mistake 5: The listing runs on a private Google account. When the person leaves, access leaves with them. Always use a business account with the business email, and define a second owner.
FAQ
What does the Google Business Profile cost? Nothing. Creating, verifying and maintaining it is completely free. You only pay for what goes beyond it — Google Ads, or a system that automates reviews and replies.
How long until changes are visible? Most field changes (hours, description, attributes) go live within minutes to hours. Category changes and the name are reviewed manually by Google — that can take a few days.
Can I manage several locations centrally?
Yes. In business.google.com you can create location groups and assign permissions per property. From three locations on, you also want a clear process for replies and photo standards — otherwise the profiles drift apart.
What does an optimized profile achieve without new reviews? It stops the losses (wrong hours, missing attributes, old photos), but it wins no new rankings. Profiles move up almost always through review frequency plus replies.
My profile got suspended — now what? Usually it is name additions or an address without a physical venue. Remove the violation and file a reinstatement request via Google's appeal form.
